Akshay Oberoi Undergoes Intense Physical & Psychological Preparation to Play the Antagonist in 2014 with Jackie Shroff

Actor Akshay Oberoi is all set to surprise audiences with one of the most intense performances of his career in the upcoming film 2014, where he steps into a dark and morally complex space as the antagonist. Known for effortlessly moving across genres, Akshay has taken a deep dive into the psyche of a conflict-driven character for this emotionally charged narrative.

For the role, the actor underwent extensive physical and mental preparation, immersing himself in the psychology of radicalisation, rage, ideological conditioning, and fractured belief systems. Understanding that the character could not be played at a surface level, Akshay spent months researching real-life behavioural patterns, emotional triggers, and the internal contradictions that often shape people consumed by violence and extremism.

The role demanded not only a visible physical transformation but also an emotionally exhausting process of understanding how anger, fear, manipulation, and misplaced conviction can alter a human being’s moral compass. Sources close to the production reveal that Akshay worked extensively on body language, emotional restraint, and psychological detailing to ensure authenticity in portraying the layered antagonist.

Speaking about the experience, Akshay Oberoi shares, “2014 has honestly been one of the most emotionally demanding experiences of my career. Playing an antagonist is never just about looking intimidating or being aggressive on screen. I really wanted to understand what drives a person towards darkness, what kind of emotional damage, conditioning, rage, loneliness, or ideological influence shapes someone’s choices. I spent a lot of time reading about radicalisation, conflict psychology, and the emotional manipulation that often exists within such worlds. What fascinated me was the moral ambiguity, these characters rarely see themselves as villains. In their minds, they are fighting for a cause, protecting a belief, or responding to pain. That complexity was extremely important for me to capture.”

He further adds, “Physically too, I had to prepare extensively because the character carries a certain intensity and unpredictability in his presence. But more than the physicality, it was mentally draining because you constantly live in a disturbed emotional space while preparing. As an actor, roles like these challenge you deeply because they force you to confront uncomfortable truths about human nature. It pushed me far outside my comfort zone, and that’s exactly why I wanted to do it.”
