Powerstar Pawan Kalyan is back on the big screen, and this time he arrives with a storm. They Call Him OG, directed by Sujeeth, has been one of the most awaited Telugu films in recent years. With Emraan Hashmi making his Telugu debut and a Mumbai gangster backdrop, expectations were sky-high. But does the film deliver? Let’s Read the They Call Him OG Review below
Plot:
The film takes us back to 90s Mumbai. Satya Dada (Prakash Raj) controls the city’s port, but rival Mirajkar (Tej Sapru) and his son Jimmy (Sudhev Nair) create chaos over a missing container full of explosives. The twist? The container belongs to dreaded don Omi Bhau (Emraan Hashmi).
As blood spills, the city waits for one man—Ojas Gambheera (Pawan Kalyan). Once the most feared gangster, he has been living in exile. Why did he leave? What’s his connection to Satya Dada? And how will his path collide with Omi Bhau’s? That’s the core of OG.
What Works
Pawan Kalyan’s Vintage Avatar: The star is in full form with massy dialogues, power-packed fights, and stylish screen presence. Every action block—from his intro to the katana sequences—is crafted for fan frenzy.
Mass Elevation Moments: The film is loaded with whistle-worthy scenes and even the title card brings goosebumps.
Emraan Hashmi’s Terrific Screen Presence: Stylish and menacing as Omi Bhau, though his role feels restricted.
Technical Brilliance:
Thaman’s background score shakes the halls.
Ravi K. Chandran’s visuals recreate 90s Bombay with grandeur.
Production values are lavish and top-class.
What Doesn’t Work
Routine Storyline: Beneath the gloss lies a predictable, thin plot.
Pacing Issues: The first half races ahead but the second half struggles to maintain momentum.
Underused Cast: Priyanka Mohan, Sriya Reddy, Prakash Raj, and Arjun Das deserved better character arcs.
Climax Showdown: Pawan vs. Emraan face-off doesn’t fully reach the intensity fans expected.
Technical Aspects
Direction: Sujeeth delivers fan service but compromises on depth.
Music: Thaman is the backbone of the film, delivering his career-best background score.
Cinematography: Slick and vibrant, perfectly complementing the gangster theme.
Editing: Sharp in the first half, slightly loose later.
Final Verdict
They Call Him OG is stylish, action-packed, and designed as a festival for Pawan Kalyan’s fans. It’s less about story and more about celebrating his aura. While the narrative is predictable, the star power, music, and visuals ensure solid entertainment for mass audiences.
